Ann Hutton1
b. circa 1822, d. April 1880
BirthCirca | circa 1822 | Ann Hutton was born circa 1822.2 |
Marriage | 18 Sep 1839 | She married Edward C. Crow, son of James Crow and Sarah Redshaw, on 18 Sep 1839 in Washington County, Virginia.3 |
Widowed | before 28 Aug 1848 | Ann was widowed when Edward died less than 10 years after their marriage. She was the mother of 4 young children. Ann's father, Arthur Hutton, became the children's guardian in August, 1848. |
Cens-1850 | 9 Aug 1850 | Two years later Ann was recorded as the head of her own household. The 1850 census was the first one to document all members of a household. Besides Ann (29), her family included Arthur (11), Frances (6), Robert (4) and William (3).4 |
Cens-1860 | 8 Jul 1860 | The 1860 census indicated that Ann owned personal property valued at $200.2 |
Cens-1870 | 3 Oct 1870 | Ann's son Arthur married in 1867. He and his wife Nancy [and their two young sons] lived with Ann in 1870. Ann's daughter Frances married in 1862. She and her husband B.F. Brown were enumerated adjacent to Ann in 1870.5 |
| | In the mid 1870s Ann's son Arthur left Virginia and migrated west. He apparently spent a few years in Oregon as his first two children were born there in the late 1870s. However Arthur and his family then moved north, settling in Whitman County in eastern Washington. They were enumerated in Whitman County on the 1883, 1885 and 1889 Territorial censuses. Interestingly, perhaps based on Arthur's feedback, several relatives also spent time in Whitman County. Arthur's first cousin, William Scott Hutton and his wife Mary Shugart were recorded there in 1889. Mary's brother, Zachariah Shugart, was married to Arthur Crow's cousin Amanda Crow. They migrated to Idaho after their marriage then settled in Whitman County around 1889.
There is some tradition that Ann (Hutton) Crow made the move west with Arthur. If so she must have returned to Virginia fairly quickly as she wrote her will in Washington County in 1879. |
Will | 2 Sep 1879 | Ann wrote her will on Sept. 2, 1879. She remembered her daughter Fannie J. Brown and grandson William B. Brown. Ann also remembered the children of her son Arthur Crow. Ann's son William Crow was not mentioned. Son Robert received $1. |
