BirthMay 1842 James Fenlon Ward was born in May 1842 in Virginia.3
Cens-185022 Jul 1850  James and his two older sisters were living with their grandparents, John and Mary Buchanan, in Smyth County, Virginia when the 1850 census was recorded. Their parents were not in the household.4
Fath-Death23 Jun 1858  James was 16 years old when his father became involved in a disagreement with a relative and was fatally shot.
Cens-18609 Jun 1860  James was enumerated as part of his mother's household in Smyth County two years later.2
Marriagecirca 1866 He married Sina Addison circa 1866.5
The book Virginia Connections reports that James married Lena or Lina Addison, however on both census records in which she appears as his wife, (1870 and 1880) the first letter of her name appears to be "S", not "L."
Cens-187012 Jul 1870 "Fenlin" and "Sina" were enumerated farming in Yellow Creek township, Linn County, Missouri, in July 1870. There were no children listed in the household, despite the fact that later records suggest a son Luther was born in Missouri in 1867.6
Cens-188011 Jun 1880 By 1880 the couple was living in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Two children were also enumerated: 12 year old Luther (b. Missouri) and 2 year old "Mertal" [Myrtle] who was born in Utah.7
The couple's move to Ogden may have been prompted by the presence of other family members. Louisa (Ward) Higginbotham, James's aunt, was an early member of the Church of Latter-day Saints. She and her husband William joined the church in 1841 and traveled with church members to Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1848 they returned to Virginia to settle family matters. While there William died from typhoid fever. However, Louisa and her children migrated to Utah about 1863, eventually settling in the Odgen area.8
James and Sina may have had an additional child named John, who died in 1882 from diptheria.9
Cens-190012 Jun 1900  By 1900 James had moved further west. He was enumerated as a widower living in La Grande, Union County, Oregon, living with his 22 year old daughter Myrtle. James was employed as a teamster; Myrtle worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. James's son Luther was also living in LaGrande.3
