Birthcirca 1840 Sarah Frances Ward was probably born circa 1840 in Virginia.3
Although Sarah was reported to be 8 years old in 1850, her age on all other census records suggests she was born abt 1840.
Cens-185022 Jul 1850  Sarah was enumerated on the 1850 census in the home of her grandparents, John and Mary Buchanan in Smyth County, Virginia.3
Two of Sarah's siblings were also living in the household. The whereabouts of their parents and other siblings in 1850 is not known at present.
Fath-Death23 Jun 1858  Sarah was about 18 years old when her father was fatally shot by his brother-in-law, George Crenshaw. The shooting was ruled an act of self defense.
Cens-18609 Jun 1860  Two years later Sarah was enumerated living in her mother's household in Smyth County.2
Marriage23 Apr 1865 She married Hannabel Hackney on 23 Apr 1865 in Tazewell County, Virginia.4
Cens-187015 Jun 1870  Sarah and Hannabel lived in the Frenchburg precinct of Menifee County, Kentucky, in 1870. Hannabel (enumerated as "H. Hackney") worked as a carpenter. He owned real estate worth $800 and personal property valued at $150. Sarah was recorded by her middle name. A 3 year old child and an infant were part of the household as was 60 year old Mary Ward [Sarah's mother].5
Deathbefore 1880 Sarah probably died before 1880 as Hannabel was listed as widowed or divorced on that year's census. Sarah's mother, Mary Ward, was again recorded as "keeping house" for Hannabel and the two children. However another source, which appears to cite Sarah's brother Ballard, states that Sarah died in 1898 or 1899.6,7
