William paid $100 for the land, almost $200 less than his brother James paid for 121 acres two years earlier. It may be that David and Mary Beattie wished to secure a future income for their son without the burden of significant debt.4

Legatee17 Oct 1818  Thirteen years later, in 1818, William's mother wrote her will leaving him a feather bed and furniture, one milch cow and a share in the rest of her property.3
Court RecordOct 1820  William and his brother James filed a lawsuit against their brother David and their sister Mary (Beattie) Clark in late 1820. However, there is no specific mention of William in the suit and he does not appear to have been an active participant.5
Ward26 Aug 1844 William was named the ward of John Clark on 26 Aug 1844 in Washington County. John was married to William's sister, Mary. The court papers filed at the time described William as an "idiot."
