James Payton Colvard1

b. 29 June 1885, d. 1 February 1963
Birth29 Jun 1885 James Payton Colvard was born on 29 Jun 1885 in Ashe County, North Carolina.2,3
Marriage1914 He married Elizabeth Katherine Edmondson, daughter of Andrew Davis Edmondson and Carrie Jane Preston, in 1914.4
Migration  Elizabeth and James appear to have migrated west to Union County, New Mexico, shortly after their marriage as their first child was born in the community of Clayton in July 1915. Elizabeth's grandparents had moved from Virginia to Clayton in 1911 and several of Elizabeth's Edmondson aunts and uncles had settled there as well.
However by the birth of their second daughter in early 1917 James and Elizabeth had returned to either Virginia or North Carolina (the birth location of this daughter was reported as VA in the 1920 census and NC in 1930 and 1940). James registered for the WWI draft in September 1918 at which time the family lived in Ashe County, North Carolina. James was employed as a coal miner.3
Military12 Sep 1918 In Sept. 1918 James completed the required World War I draft registration while residing at Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina. He was employed as a miner for Mead Toliver Coal Co. The physical description part of the form described James as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair.3
Cens-19208 Jan 1920  By 1920 they had returned to Virginia. That year's census recorded them living adjacent to Elizabeth (enumerated as Katherine)'s parents in Loudoun County. James listed his occupation as "orchardist" as did his father-in-law.5
Cens-19304 Apr 1930  This move seems to have been short lived as the couple's third child was born back in North Carolina a few years later. In April 1930 James and Catherine were enumerated in the community of Jefferson in Ashe County. Their entry noted that James had been 32 at the time of their marriage, Catherine was 18. They owned a home on South Street in Jefferson where James worked as a "state road patrolman."6
Cens-1940  The family made at least one additional move to Virginia and back again. Although the 1940 census enumerated them in Jefferson, North Carolina, it also indicated that in 1935 they resided in Loudoun County. Virginia. The 1940 census also asked each person what grade of education they had completed. James had finished 2 years of high school; Catherine had finished four. Interestingly, Catherine was also employed. She worked as the forewoman for the "NYA."7
Death1 Feb 1963 James died on 1 Feb 1963 in Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina, at age 77.2
Burial He was buried at Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina.8
