Marriage4 Mar 1851 Dorcas M. Hayter married Moses W. Nelson on 4 Mar 1851 in Washington County, Virginia.2 
  The marriage must have been short lived. Dorcas' father wrote his will in Jan. 1859 in which he left Dorcas and her sister Sally Lynch a tract of land south of the Main Rd. James added the notation that if necessary to protect Dorcas M. Hayter's share from the claims of her former husband Moses W. Nelson, or his creditors, she may appoint Richard Lynch trustee for her benefit to secure the title and hold the property for her use.1 
Cens-186026 Oct 1860  In October 1860 Dorcas was enumerated living with her sister Sally and Sally's husband Richard Lynch in Lebanon, Russell County, Virginia. Richard served as clerk of the Russell Co. Court. Dorcas' entry indicated that she owned land worth $6,200 and personal property of $7,500. Richard and Sally Lynch owned land worth $9,200 and personal property worth $9,700.3
