1852  In the first years of their marriage Catherine and Parent's household included Catherine's mother Elizabeth, who had been widowed for many years. The extended family lived on the waters of Plum Creek east of present day Glade Springs, in Washington County. The land originally belonged to Catherine's grandfather Joseph Buchanan, who deeded it to Catherine's father Joseph, Jr in 1807.

Following the younger Joseph's death the tract was purchased by Solomon Barrick, Catherine's half-brother. He in turn left the land to their mother, Elizabeth (Barrick) Buchanan. On her death it was to pass to Catherine's ownership.5,1 
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  In 1860 Parent and Catherine's household included 75 year old Elizabeth Buchanan who under the conditions of Solomon Barrick's will still owned the land. It was valued at $4,000. The household also included Joseph (8), John (4), and Wiley (1).3
