Military | 14 May 1862 | Mahlon enlisted in Company F. of the 23rd Virginia Battalion on May 14th at Marion in Smyth County. He appeared on all muster rolls with his company through June 1863. The muster rolls for the rest of 1863 and early 1864 note that he was sick at home in Smyth Co. He was apparently a patient at Breckenridge Hospital in Marion where a receipt shows he was issued clothing on Oct. 8th, 1864. Several days later he was noted as absent from the hospital.3 |
Cens-1870 | 26 Jul 1870 | After the war Mahlon tried to return to life as a farmer. But he was not well. He and Elizabeth were recorded on July 26th, 1870 with their 6 surviving children: Joseph L. (16), William H. (14), Nancy E. (10), Louisa C. (8), Fanny B. (4) abd Sallie A. (2). The household also included 43 year old Elizabeth Hutton.4 [Mahlon's sister] |
Death | 3 Aug 1870 | One week after the census taker's visit, on 3 Aug 1870, Mahlon died of typhoid fever.2 |
