Birth11 Jan 1834 George Allen Maiden was born on 11 Jan 1834 in Botetourt County, Virginia.1
Migration  When George was about 9 years old his family moved from Botetourt County south to Washington County.
Cens-185029 Jul 1850  George's mother died in early 1850. George and 3 of his brothers were enumerated that summer in their father's household. Two other brothers were living in adjacent households.3
Cens-186027 Jun 1860  Ten years later only George and his brother Lewis were still at home although several siblings were again enumerated nearby.4
Military  When the Civil War broke out George, like many of his relatives, joined the Confederate Army. George fought in the 48th Virginia Infantry (Army of Northern Virginia). He was captured but later paroled in a prisoner exchange.5,6,1
Education  With the end of the war Emory and Henry College reopened. George and his youngest brother both graduated in the Spring of 1866.1
Migration  George then appears to have moved to Camden in Benton County, Tennessee.
Marriage He married Rosamond Hawley in Tennessee.1
Cens-1870Jun 1870  George and Rosamond were apparently back in Virginia in early 1868 when their first child was born, however by 1870 they were again in Benton County, Tennessee. George was employed as a school teacher.7
Family records indicate that in the years between 1870 and 1880 George and Rosamond had 4 additional children, all of whom died in infancy [as I do not have names and dates for all of them I have not attempted to add them to the list of children at the end of this narrative].1
Cens-18808 Jun 1880  By 1880 the couple had moved to neighboring Humphreys County where George continued to teach school. Their second son to survive infancy, John Bright (enumerated as Bridy) was recorded as a 1 year old along with his 10 year old brother R.E. [Royal Edward]8
Five additional children were born between 1881 and 1890; all but 1 survived to adulthood.
Cens-19009 Jun 1900 By 1900 George and Rosamond had moved west to Weakley County. There they were enumerated at the turn of the century after 32 years of marriage. Rosamond's entry indicated that she was the mother of 11 children, 6 of whom were living. George, at 66 years of age, had returned to farming. The children who were still at home included: John (21), Lewis (19), Seldon (16), Orin (15) and Nellie (10) [daughter Irene, born in 1887, died before 1900].9
Death1905 George died in 1905 in Weakley County, Tennessee.1
