Birth31 May 1845 William Henry Maiden was born on 31 May 1845 in Washington County, Virginia.4,2
Military  William served as a provost guard in the Confederate Army for 13 months during the Civil War. He was honorably discharged in May 1864 because of physical disability.5
Marriage20 Jul 1871 He married Amanda E. Thayer on 20 Jul 1871 in Washington County.2
Cens-188014 Jun 1880  In the first years following their marriage William farmed land near his parents and other Maiden relatives in the Saltville District of Washington County. The 1880 census enumerated William and Amanda, who had been married 9 years, with 4 children in their household: Marion (9) [erroneously recorded as a daughter], Annie (7), Willy (5) and Emory (1).6
A third son, John, died in 1878 at one year of age. Amanda would give birth to a 4th son, Charles, 2 months after the census enumeration.
Cens-190015 Jun 1900 By 1900 the family had moved slightly east, settling in the Rich Valley district of Smyth County, Virginia, where William worked as a day laborer and the family rented a home in Saltville. He was 55 years old. Amanda at 46 was listed as the mother of 14 children, of whom 12 were living. Nine of the children were enumerated at home with their parents, ranging in age from 21 year old Emory to 3 year old Verlin.7
Milit-PensMar 1906  In March 1906, while living in Smyth County, William applied for a Confederate pension based on his service during the Civil War. The various forms indicate that he was suffering from heart and kidney problems and was unable to work full time. He also reported that he was unable to present his discharge papers as they had been lost when his dwelling was destroyed by fire.5

There William and 2 of his sons (Benton, 16 and Verlin, 13) found employment at a cotton mill. Son Charles worked as a locomotive fireman. He and his wife Carrie made their home with William and Amanda. They had been married 7 years. Three young children were enumerated as William's grandchildren, but it is not clear from the census if Charles and Carrie were their parents.8
