Washington Co. > Google Maps Street View Directions

One of the cool features of Google Maps is their selected street view images. This allows you to "walk" down certain streets and see actual images of the area.

The street view feature is now available on Google Maps viewed within RamblingRoots, however not all features work well with every browser (Firefox seems to work best). You may find the ability to "walk" along a road is not fully functional and a straight road may appear to bend sharply. However you should be able to drag and drop the yellow icon on a section of road highlighted in blue and then see a 360 degree view from that point.

You may want to identify a location on the RamblingRoots map and then open a second browser window to view the same map directly in Google. If you're not familiar with "Street View" try this:

  • Open a new browser window or tab, go to www.google.com, click on Maps, and zoom in on Washington County.
  • Select the Map or Satellite View (check the "show labels" box).
  • Drag the small yellow figure from the upper left hand corner out across the map. Note how many roads turn blue.
  • Drop the yellow figure on one of the blue roads. The map will change to a street level view.
  • A smaller window in the lower right corner will show you where "you" are located and what direction you are looking (this feature will not appear on maps viewed in RamblingRoots).
  • Click on the compass arrows to look right or left, or up or down. Or grab the "N" on the compass wheel and rotate it.
  • A line with forward and backward arrows appears on the roadway. Click on the arrows to "walk" along the roadway. Or drag the arrow with your cursor (this feature works reasonably well on RamblingRoots maps viewed with Firefox 5.0).
  • Click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner to return to the full map view.
