I James Porterfield of Washington County and state of Virginia being in a low State of health tho of sound disposing mind & memory do hereby make this my last Will & testament, in the manner following, to wit.

1st. I wish my hereafter named Executor to sell such of my personal property as he and my wife Jane shall judg – that the family can spare together with my Negro girl Lettisua and out of the proceeds of such sale to pay all of my just debts and as the principle debt that I do owe is coming to Dr. Sam’l Dunn, and it is my wish that said Dunn should have said negro girl if him &
my Executors agree.

2nd. I wish my wife Jane all wayes [sic] to have her rite of dowery [sic], my present arrangement not work agreeably. That is I wish the balance of all my personal property to remain in common on the farm for the benefit of the family & my three sons James C. Porterfield, John W. Porterfield and Lilburn B. Porterfield to carry on & work the farm and out of the proceeds of said farm
The family is to be supported and after supporting the family comfortably I Wish my aforesaid sons to have all the nett [sic] proceeds of my farm & stock.

3rd. I will that all my children my three named sons & two daughters, to wit, Sarah H. and Isabella _ [J?] Porterfield shall share equal in the divide of my estate to the personal and real my three sons getting my land and my daughters getting their portion out of the proceeds of my personal property & Negroes and said division to take place when my youngest son Lilburn comes to be twenty one years of age.

4th & lastly. I do hereby appoint my son James C. Porterfield the Executor of this my Will and request the court of our county not to require security of him in his Executorial bond. In witness hereof I have signed my name and affixed my seal this 10th day of March 1847.

At a court held for Washington County the 22nd day of March 1847
     The last Will and testament of James Porterfield deceased was exhibited in court and proved by the oath of John Clark Sen’r & Tobias Smyth two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of James C. Porterfield the executor therein named who took the oath of an executor prescribed by law and entered into and acknowledged his bond in the sum of three thousand dollars conditioned

as the law directs, and it having been requested by the testator that no security should be required of the executor on his obtaining probate of the said Will A certificate is therefore granted him for obtaining letters testamentary on the estate of the said James Porterfield deceased in due form without giving security
