Fath-DeathSep 1849 Robert's father died in Sep 1849 leaving a large number of children from both a first and second marriage. 
Cens-185021 Aug 1850  The following summer Robert was enumerated as the head of a household that included his mother and 3 younger sisters. His brother Wesley was recorded as the adjacent household.6 
Land-Buy13 Nov 1850  In November, 1814, Robert paid his brother Benjamin $100 for Benjamin's 1/14th undivided share of 3 adjacent tracts of land totalling 229 acres on Byars Mill Creek in Washington County. The men's father, Moses Hutton, owned the land at the time of his death.7 
Military10 Apr 1852  Robert was commissioned a captain of the 70th Regiment of the Virginia Militia on 10 Apr 1852.8 
Marriage8 Mar 1855 He married Elizabeth Steele Edmondson, daughter of William Moore Edmondson and Matilda Wedding, on 8 Mar 1855 in Washington County.1,9 
Cens-186012 Jul 1860 Robert and Elizabeth were recorded on the 1860 census less than one year before Virginia seceded from the Union. Robert was 30 years old and Elizabeth was 23. Their farm in Washington County was valued at $1,800 and they owned personal property worth $250. The household also included 4 year old Alson and 3 year old William.10 
ChildDeath  A third child, Matilda, born in March 1859, had apparently died in infancy as she is not listed on this or later census enumerations. 
Cens-1860- Agric The 1860 census included an agricultural schedule which provided additional insight into Robert's farm. He owned 57 acres, of which 50 were under cultivation. He also owned 4 horses, 2 cows and 23 swine, and in the previous year produced 60 bushels of wheat, 250 bushels of Indian corn, 100 bushels of oats and 25 bushels of Irish potatoes.11 
Military When the Civil War broke out Robert served in Company F of the 37th Virginia Infantry (CSA) which was known as the Glade Spring Rifles.12,13 
Cens-187027 Sep 1870  Following the war Robert returned to farming. The 1870 census clarified that he and Elizabeth lived in the Glade Spring section of the county. Robert's land was now valued at $2,400. The family had grown by the addition of two more daughters. Robert's sister Araminta also lived with the family.14 
Cens-18806 Jun 1880  Son William married around 1880; he and his wife also made their home with Robert and Elizabeth.15 
Death27 Oct 1892 Robert died of rheumatism, probably on 27 Oct 1892.4,16,17 
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
