Nancy Jinks/Jenkins1

b. between 1795 and 1800, d. 19 April 1867
Birthbetween 1795 and 1800 Nancy Jinks/Jenkins was probably born between 1795 and 1800 in Virginia.2,3,4
Marriage18 Jan 1820 She married Moses Hutton on 18 Jan 1820 in Washington County, Virginia.1
For a discussion of Nancy's surname see the Research Comment below this narrative.
Cens-18201820  The 1820 census was recorded some months after Moses and Nancy's marriage. The household included a male age 26-45 and a female age 26-45 who presumably represented Moses and Nancy. Six young children were also present, no doubt representing Moses's children from his first marriage. A female over 45 was part of the household as well [she appears to have also been present in 1810 and 1830; might this be Moses's mother?]. In addition, 3 males age 16-26 were tallied. I do not know who they represent.5
In the years that followed, Moses and Nancy added 11 additional children to the family.
Widowed27 Sep 1849  Moses died in September, 1849.
Court RecordFeb 1850  Moses's will did not specificy how his land and slaves were to be divided (with the exception of one slave left to his daughter Araminta). His children apparently decided their interests would be best served if the property was sold and the proceeds divided, however that required a court order. In order to obtain such a decree they divided into 2 groups and one brought suit against the other. This appears to have been a formality. Nancy was entitled to 1/3 of the value of the slaves during her life. This was determined as an annuity of $26.30 a year (the estimated annual interest on 1/3 of sale price of $1,315.00) times 13 (the court's estimate of Nancy's life expectancy) which equaled $232.60.6
Cens-185021 Aug 1850  The first federal census to list all members of a household by name was enumerated in 1850. Nancy was recorded in the household of Robert Hutton [her son]. Elizabeth, Aramita and Sally [3 of Nancy's daughters] lived with her.2
Cens-186014 Jul 1860  However, by 1860 the household had dwindled to Nancy (age 60) and Araminta (recorded as age 21).3
Nancy was most likely buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery with Moses and other family members. The Washington County Cemetery book High On A Windy Hill reported the presence of a stone in the 1960s that read Nancy J. Hutton, 3 Oct. 18_9 ___ 18_9. Clearly the stone was difficult to read and may not have been interpreted accurately.7
Death19 Apr 1867 Nancy died on 19 Apr 1867.8

Research Comment:

Nancy's maiden name has long been a source of discussion among Hutton researchers. The Washington Co. marriage records, and the minister's return from which they were created, recorded her names as Jinks. However, since no family of that name was known to live in the county during an appropriate timeframe, researchers have wondered if the name was actually Zinks. Casting a shadow on that theory is the fact that the same clerk recorded other surnames beginning with "Z", and wrote the letter distinctly.

New research reveals another possibility. In 1898 Nancy and Moses' daughter Nancy M. (Hutton) Galliher married in King Co., Washington. The marriage certificate identified Nancy's parents as Moses Hutton and Nancy Jenkins. Was Jinks actually Jenkins - written sloppily by the Washington Co. clerk in 1820? The certificate also stated that Nancy's mother was born in North Carolina. Nancy's brother Robert, one of the few siblings for whom we have an 1880 or later census, also stated his mother was born in North Carolina. On the other hand Nancy herself said she was born in Virginia on both the 1850 and 1860 census.

The name Jenkins was not common in Washington County however there were men of that name present in the late 1700s and early 1800s. For instance, a Philip Jenkins and a John Jenkins witnessed a deed in June 1797; also an Aaron Jenkins witnessed a deed in August 1797. One of these men apparently owned land in the county as a Feb. 1794 deed between Alexander Montgomery and James James mentions Jenkins' line. Deed Book 2 includes mention of an Augustine Jenkins who witnessed several deeds.

Future research on Nancy, second wife of Moses Hutton, should at least include the possibility her surname was Jenkins.9,10
