Cens-186012 Jul 1860 Robert and Elizabeth were recorded on the 1860 census less than one year before Virginia seceded from the Union. Robert was 30 years old and Elizabeth was 23. Their farm in Washington County was valued at $1,800 and they owned personal property worth $250. The household also included 4 year old Alson and 3 year old William.8 
ChildDeath  A third child, Matilda, born in March 1859, had apparently died in infancy as she is not listed on this or later census enumerations. 
Military When the Civil War broke out Robert served in Company F of the 37th Virginia Infantry (CSA) which was known as the Glade Spring Rifles.9,10 
Cens-187027 Sep 1870  Following the war Robert returned to farming. The 1870 census clarified that he and Elizabeth lived in the Glade Spring section of the county. Robert's land was now valued at $2,400. The family had grown by the addition of two more daughters. Robert's sister Araminta also lived with the family.11 
Cens-18806 Jun 1880  Son William married around 1880; he and his wife also made their home with Robert and Elizabeth.12 
Widowed1892 Robert died in 1892.13 
Cens-Sum  Elizabeth continued to make her home with their son William and his growing family.14,15 
1865  Elizabeth was a charter member of Greenfield Church with which she was associated for more than 50 years. She was noted for "visiting the sick and for her sympathy and help toward the needy and suffering."1 
Will22 Aug 1914 Elizabeth wrote her will in August of 1914. She left her son William a life estate in her property on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River; on his death it was to pass to her grandchildren Robert S.C. Hutton and Willie Jean Hutton. In return, William, Robert S.C. and Willie Jean were to pay set amounts to Elizabeth's son Alson Hutton, daughter Jennie Horne and daughter Laura Copenhaver. Elizabeth appointed her son William as her executor.16 
Death10 Apr 1916 Elizabeth died on 10 Apr 1916 at age 79.5,1 
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
