Devisee29 Dec 1835  William's father, John, willed William the tract of land John lived on with the exception of a portion given to William's sister Ann Snodgrass. However, certain sections of the tract were to be enjoyed by William's mother during her lifetime. William also received a Negro slave named Jack and a Negro girl named Patsy. William was to pay John's granddaughters, Eliza Ann and Martha Edmondson (who were living with John) each one horse and saddle worth $100 when they came of age.
Land-Buy5 Jan 1841 On 5 Jan 1841 William's mother, Martha, sold him 34 acres of land on the Middle fork of the Holston River in Washington County.4
At the same time she sold William's brother-in-law, Joseph Snodgrass, 6 acres of land originally left to William by his father.5
Cens-185026 Aug 1850 At age 40 William was enumerated on the Washington County census. This was the first federal census to list all members of the household by name. William and Matilda's family included 10 children: John 17, Rebeka 15, Elizabeth 13, Martha 11, Mary 9, Matilda 8, Amanda 6, Sarah 4, Henry 2, and William 3 months.6
Cens-186014 Jul 1860  Ten children were again recorded in 1860, but included 2 born after 1850: 7 year old Florence and 5 year old Abednego [daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth had married in the intervening years]. The census that year listed William as a farmer who owned land valued at $6,000 and personal property worth $2,000.7
Cens-1860- Slave10 Aug 1860  The 1860 census also included a slave enumeration. William appears to have owned a 21 year old male slave.8
Cens-187026 Sep 1870 The 1870 census clarified that the couple were living in Glade Spring township in Washington County. William's land was valued that year at $3,000; his personal property at $500. Only 2 children were still living at home: H.H. [Henry], age 21 and A.W. [Abednego], age 15.9
Land  William's great grandson wrote a manuscript (published 1981) in which he stated that William lived on the Edmondson farm near Lodi in the Liberty Hall community. The land was part of a tract situated near the site of Ft. Edmondson. The original tract was abt 3,000 acres and was located between the Middle and South forks of the Holston River. It was given to Col. Wm Edmiston who later sold, deeded or gifted parts of it to various members of the family. One tract was given to William's grandfather, Andrew Edmiston.10
Will30 Oct 1875  William wrote his will in late October 1875. He left the use of the farm on Cedar Creek and all the household and kitchen furniture to his beloved wife, Matilda. At her death it was to be divided between his sons John W. and Henry H. and his son-in-law William Snodgrass. Henry was to receive the portion with the home buildings on it. These three heirs were to raise a fund of $2,000 (they were not all charged with equal contributions). This fund was to be equally divided between William's four daughters: Rebecca McCall, Elizabeth S. Hutton, Martha Ann Davenport and Amanda A. Scott.11,12
