Birth12 Jan 1833 John W. Edmondson was born on 12 Jan 1833 in Washington County, Virginia.7,8 
  Sources vary as to whether his middle name was Wesley or Wedding. 
Childhood  John was the first of 13 children born to William Edmondson and Matilda (Wedding) Edmondson. He grew up on the Edmondson farm near Lodi in the Liberty Hall Community.9,6,10 
Military John served as a private in Co. F. (Glade Spring Rifles) of the 37th Reg. Infantry. He was wounded at Kernstown, Virginia on March 23, 1862 but returned to duty and was wounded again at McDowell, Virginia on May 8, 1862.11 
Marriage9 Oct 1866 He married Martha Ann Hawthorne, daughter of David L. Hawthorne and Lydia Cole, on 9 Oct 1866 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
  They had grown up in neighboring households. Martha was 11 years younger than John.6,12  
Cens-187027 Sep 1870 Following their marriage John and Martha established their home about two miles south of Meadowview. There they were enumerated in 1870 with two small children, 3 year old William and 2 year old "L.B." [Lydia Belle]13,14 
Fath-Death13 Nov 1875  John's father died in the late fall of 1875. His will named John as his executor and also left John a share of the family land on Cedar Creek, although the portion with the home on it was to go to John's brother Henry.4 
Cens-Sum  John and Martha spent the rest of their lives farming the land south of Meadowview. John's brother Henry lived not far away. Martha gave birth to 9 children during the marriage, but two died young: Elizabeth in the fall of 1879 and Hugh in the spring of the same year. A third son, Henry, died at age 19 in 1902. Two sons, William James and Samuel, became educators. David took over operation of the family farm; he and his wife and first 2 children were enumerated living with John and Martha in 1910.15,16,17 
Death7 Jun 1914 John died on 7 Jun 1914 in Washington County at age 81.8 
Burial He was buried at Greenfield Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.7
