Samuel Buchanan1

b. 16 August 1783, d. 8 August 1867
FatherJoseph Buchanan2 b. say 1750
MotherAnn (?)2
Birth16 Aug 1783 Samuel Buchanan was born on 16 Aug 1783 in Virginia.3
Marriage14 Aug 1806 He married Catharine Barrick, daughter of Philip Barrick, on 14 Aug 1806 in Washington County, Virginia.4,5
Land-Buy15 Nov 1814  On Nov. 15th, 1814 Samuel purchased 59 acres of land in Washington County along the foot of Walker's Mountain from Robert Buchanan and Elizabeth, his wife, for $354.6
Cens-18401840  Samuel's 1840 household included 1 male aged 10-15 [son Samuel], 1 male 50-60 [Samuel], 1 female 5-9 [possibly Nancy although she should have been older], 2 females 20-29 [probably Janet & Mary or could have been Janet and Nancy; Elizabeth was married], 1 female 30-39 [?], 1 female 50-59. [Catherine]
Cens-18507 Aug 1850  The 1850 census identified the names of everyone in the household. Catherine apparently was deceased as she was not present. Samuel (67) owned land worth $1,600. The household also included 3 of Samuel and Catherine's adult children: Jennett (39), Nancy (29) and Samuel (24). The next individual identified in the household was Samuel Fulkes (17).7
Three individuals were listed after Samuel. They were not recorded with a specific surname, hence the assumption has usually been made that they were also Fulkes. Their given names were Sarah (13), John (12) and Samuel (8).
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  However in 1860 at least two and possibly 3 of the same individuals may have again been enumerated in Samuel's household, but this time with the surname Harris: Susannah (23), John (23) and Samuel (19). They were likely the children of Samuel and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth who married William Harris in 1835 but died in 1846. Samuel's 1860 household also included Jeannett Buchanan (49), Nancy (40) and Samuel (34). The elder Samuel owned land worth $6,000 in 1860 and personal property valued at $1,000.8
Land-Grant1 Oct 1860  In the fall of 1858 Samuel arranged for an inclusive survey to clarify the boundaries of his property which had been assembled from multiple smaller parcels through the years. The Commonwealth of Virginia then issued a grant for the combined 183 acres.9
The land sat on the north and south side of Plum Creek, just east of Washington Springs Road.
Death8 Aug 1867 Samuel died on 8 Aug 1867 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 83.10,2
Probate Recd1 Mar 1883 A settlement record for Samuel Buchanan's estate was filed in Washington County, Virginia, on 1 Mar 1883. It included entries from Sept. 1868 through 1882. Receiving generally consistent amounts as distributees ($125-$150) were Janette Buchanan, Wilson Buchanan, Mary Ann G. Buchanan, Mary G. Cunningham, James Buchanan's heirs, Jos M. Buchanan and Nancy C. Buchanan who transferred her share to J__ Hutten. In addition, John A.P. Hutton & wife received $104, John Harris in right of his wife [?] received $30 and James R. Buchanan received $12. James D. Hutton was the administrator.11
Mary Ann Buchanan was likely the widow of Samuel's son William who died in 1860. The payment to John A.P. Hutton and wife reflects the 1868 marriage of John Hutton to Susannah, daughter of William and Elizabeth Harris.12 [no doubt the Susannah Harris of Samuel's 1860 household]
In April 1874 John B. Harris [son of Elizabeth (Buchanan) Harris] sold 11 acres of the old Samuel Buchanan tract to Margaret Grinstead and others. Then in Jan. 1878 John A.P. Hutton and Susannah (Harris) Hutton, his wife, sold an adjacent 12 acres of Samuel's old land to Margaret Grinstead. That deed mentioned the former Samuel Buchanan home as a corner. It appears Samuel's home sat on Plum Creek Road, probably just east of the intersection with present day Sharon Lane.13,14
