Cens-18509 Sep 1850  William and Mary Ann made their home in Washington County where they were enumerated in the early fall of 1850. Besides William (42) and Mary (35) the household included Phebe (10), Samuel (8), Amanda (6) and Phebe Buchanan (60).8 
  The elder Phoebe (who should have been enumerated as Phoebe Redshaw) was Mary Ann's mother and William's aunt. [William and Mary Ann were first cousins as their mothers were sisters] 
Cens-186031 Jul 1860  Ten years later William and Mary Ann's family had grown by the addition of Margaret, Joseph and Moses. William's 1860 household entry also indicated that he owned land valued at $1,260 and personal property worth $600.9 
Death11 Sep 1860 William died of consumption on 11 Sep 1860 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 51.10,2,11

Receiving amounts totalling $125-$150 each and identified as distributees: Janette Buchanan, Wilson Buchanan, Nancy C. Buchanan who transferred her share to J__ Hutten, Wilson Buchanan, Mary Ann Buchanan, Mary G. Cunningham, James Buchanan's heirs and Jos M. Buchanan. Additional payments identified as distributions were paid to John A.P. Hutton & wife ($104) John Harris in right of his wife ($30) and James R. Buchanan ($12).
