Isaac James Horne1

d. 1877 or 1878
Marriage1 Nov 1827 Isaac James Horne married Eliza Talbert, daughter of Bazel Talbert and Mary Logan, on 1 Nov 1827 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Land-Buy  Eliza's mother died in 1831. Within a few years Isaac and Eliza began to acquire her siblings interest in the land on the old Stage Rd. where Eliza's family had lived. The property included an inn known in later years as the Old Stagecoach Inn or the Talbert Inn.2,3,4
Legatee  Eliza's sister Margaret died in 1834. Margaret's will left Isaac her share of the land on the "main road" and noted that Isaac already lived on the land.5
Tax1836  Isaac and Eliza continued to serve stagecoach travelers as her parents had done. By 1836 Isaac's name appeared on tax rolls indicating he held a license for a house of private entertainment [food and lodging provided, but not liquor]. The rent value for tax purposes was listed at $75 (by comparison, other houses of private entertainment in the district reported rent values ranging from $50 to $200).6
Cens-185022 Aug 1850  Isaac and Eliza were enumerated in 1850 when the first census to list all members of a household was taken. Isaac's entry stated that he owned land worth $6,000. In addition to Isaac (49) and Eliza (47) the household included William (16) and Bazel (10).7
William married in 1858 and for a few years established his own household.
Cens-18603 Jul 1860  Hence he was not part of Isaac and Eliza's 1860 census enumeration. However, the household did include Eliza's sister Mary Hayne, who had moved to Alabama following her marriage, but by 1860 had returned to Virginia with 4 children. The household also included Isaac and Eliza's 20 year old son Basil. Isaac's land was worth $25,000 in 1860 and he owned personal property worth $5,000.8
Cens-1860- Slave  The personal property included the value of 7 slaves. They included 3 young adult females and 4 children. They lived in two slave cabins on the property.9
ChildDeath  During the early days of the Civil War, Isaac and Eliza's son Basil enlisted in Co. F of the 37th Virginia Infantry. He died in a Union prison camp in the spring of 1862.
Cens-187027 Sep 1870  The first census after the war suggested William and his family had returned to the Stagecoach Inn to live with Isaac and Eliza. A cook lived with the family, although with the advent of regular train service the inns on the Great Rd. no longer served the visitors they once did.10
Isaac and Eliza outlived both of their children as son William died in Jan. 1873 (Eliza died in Nov. 1874). The family inn then passed to William's children.
Death1877 or 1878 Isaac died in late 1877 or early 1878.11
