Birth17 Aug 1839 Basil L. Horne was born on 17 Aug 1839.1
Military25 Apr 1861 On 25 Apr 1861 Basil enlisted as a private in Co. F. of the 37th Virginia Infantry. He served under Capt. George Graham who later described Basil as 5 foot, 5 inches tall, with a fair complexion and grey eyes. Basil initially signed on for a 1 year period of service but re-enlisted at the end of that term.2
Basil was taken prisoner on 23 March, 1862 during the First Battle of Kernstown.3
Death19 Apr 1862 or 18 May 1862 He died on 19 Apr 1862 or 18 May 1862 at Ft. Delaware in Delaware. The date of Basil's death is not consistently reported in the surviving records. A Horne family monument at Old Glade Spring Cemetery uses April 19th 1862. That date was also used on a Ft. Delaware Prisoner of War exchange record created in Aug. 1862. However a company roster roll for May and June 1862 stated that he had been taken prisoner and died on May 18th. Capt. George Graham completed an affidavit allowing Isaac Horne, as Basil's administrator, to collect $125.96 owned Basil at his death. Capt. Graham's entry stated Basil died May 19th, 1862. Since Basil died in a Union Prisoner of War camp, it is impossible to know how Capt. Graham obtained the May 19th date.1,4,5,2
