Birth6 Nov 1822 or 6 Nov 1825 William Moore was born Nov. 6, 1822 according to a transcription of his headstone, however, his age on all census records, along with his reported age at marriage suggest he was born in 1824 or 1825. A transcription from the bible of William's grandfather, William Moore, further complicates the issue. One entry states: Samuel Moore's son William Moore was born November 6, 1822. However, one entry below is this: William Moore was born Nov. 6, 1825. The age reported on William's death record suggests he was born in Feb. 1823.3,4,5,6,7,8
William grew up in the Liberty Hall area of Washington County, Virginia. Following his father's death in 1853 William assumed the primary responsibility for the family farm, caring for his mother and younger sister.5,6
Military  William served briefly in Company F of the 37th Virginia Infantry.9
Cens-18701870  William's mother died in 1870 and was not enumerated on the census that year. However, William's household still included his 42 year old sister Jane. In addition 3 children of his older sister Elizabeth McSpadden had joined the family.7
William's brother John was also deceased, having died in 1858. And his brother Andrew died in 1864.
Marriage8 Nov 1876 He married Mary Elizabeth Crenshaw, daughter of George Sanders Crenshaw and Margaret Wilson Buchanan, on 8 Nov 1876 in Washington County, Virginia.10
They were first cousins, once removed. William was in his early 50s and Mary was in her early 30s at the time of their marriage.
William and Mary remained in the old Moore home (built late 1700s) near Lodi in which William had been living prior to his marriage.11
Heir  Beginning in 1878 William received payments as an heir of his mother's unmarried brothers, James, Mathew and Robert Buchanan. Over the next 8 years William inherited $584. His wife's mother, Margaret (Buchanan) Crenshaw, received a similiar amount, as did William's sister Jane and his 3 McSpadden nieces and nephews (William, Amelia Jane "Jenny" and John), heirs of his deceased sister Elizabeth.12,13
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  By 1880 William and Mary were the parents of 2 year old Annie and 10 month old George. William's 45 year old sister Jane was still a part of the household, as was 35 year old Amelia Jane ("Jennie") McSpadden (William and John McSpadden had both married in 1876).8
Another son would be born to William and Mary a few months after the 1880 census, followed by a daughter named Elizabeth in 1885.
Will2 Aug 1892 William's will, written on 2 Aug 1892 stated that wife Mary E. Moore was to have all the land and personal property for eight years after which her dower share was to be laid off. William's sons George and Samuel were to receive their share when they turned 21. Following Mary's death her share of the land was to be divided between sons George and Samuel. Mary's share in the personal property was to be divided between all four of William's children, George, Samuel, Anna and Elizabeth Moore. William also noted that his niece Jane McSpadden was to have a home and support as long as she remained single or wanted to stay with the family.14
Death19 Sep 1892 William died of cancer on 19 Sep 1892 in Washington County, Virginia.3,15,16
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3
Will-Recd26 Sep 1892 William's will was recorded on 26 Sep 1892 in Washington County, Virginia.14
