Birth16 Oct 1863 Jacob Oliver Susong was born on 16 Oct 1863 in Washington County, Virginia.1,6,7
Childhood  Jacob was the youngest child in a family that included 2 boys and 6 girls (although one sister died in early childhood). He grew up on the family farm in the Goodson District of Washington County, Virginia. His father's brother, Jacob, also lived with the family, and in 1880 his father's sister, Sarah Merchant, was also in the home.8,2
Marriage31 Jul 1891 He married first Elizabeth H. Byars, daughter of Arthur Henderson Byars and Mary Jane Edmondson Ryburn, on 31 Jul 1891 in Washington County, Virginia. They were second cousins, once removed.4
1 Aug 1891 He was 27 and she was 19.
Legatee1 Feb 1897 Jacob's parents both died in December 1896. He was named executor of his father's estate and administrator of his mother's estate. In addition, his father's brother, Jacob H. Susong, had died two years earlier, also leaving Jacob. O. to execute his affairs. These three estates involved over $30,000 in cash and notes, of which Jacob personally inherited about $7,000.9,5,10
Interestingly, Jacob's sister, Louisa Susong, who also died in 1896 did not mention him in her will, despite remembering her other siblings, and she named her sister's husband as her executor.11
Cens-Sum Jacob and his first wife Elizabeth lived and farmed in the Goodson District of Washington County. There they raised five children, including a daughter, Martha who died in 1906 at five years of age.12,13
It appears Jacob may have married a yet to be identified woman by the given name of Margaret after Elizabeth's death in 1911 and before July 1918. She is listed as his wife in a Washington County deed at that time. However, by 1920 they were apparently not living together (although Jacob described himself as married on the census recorded that year) and by 1923, when he married Lucy Ryburn, his marital status was listed as "divorced."14,15
Marriage15 May 1923 He married Lucy Byars Ryburn, daughter of William McNeal Ryburn and Harriet T. Flournoy, on 15 May 1923 in Washington County, Virginia.16
They were second cousins. She was also the aunt of Jacob's first wife.
Cens-193026 Apr 1930 Jacob and Lucy were recorded on the 1930 census of Washington County, along with Jacob's youngest daughter from his first marriage, who was also named Lucy.17
Death4 Sep 1936 Jacob died on 4 Sep 1936 in Bristol, Virginia, at age 72.1,6
Burial He was buried with his first wife Elizabeth and their daughter Martha at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Washington County.1
