Harriet T. Flournoy1,2

b. 14 February 1844, d. 1919
FatherJohn J. Flourney3
MotherPermelia W. (?)3
Birth14 Feb 1844 Harriet T. Flournoy was born on 14 Feb 1844 according to a family bible, although this disagrees with the years of birth listed on her cemetery stone (1847) and on the 1900 census (1850). It is however consistent with her reported age in 1870, 1880, and on her marriage record.1,4,5
Name Other  She appears to have used the nickname "Hattie."
Hattie worked as a housekeeper in the Ryburn home after the death of William's first wife, Jane and eventually became William's second wife.6
Marriage2 Jun 1870 She married William McNeal Ryburn, son of Beattie Ryburn and Jane Ryburn, on 2 Jun 1870. She was 27 and he was 55.3,7
Cens-18703 Oct 1870  The official census date in 1870 was June 1st which was the day before their wedding. However, the census taker did not make it to their home until early October. Following the census rules, he enumerated the household as it stood on census day, June first, which meant that William and Hattie's marriage was not indicated in the census statistics.8,9
Cens-1880Jun 1880 Ten years later they were recorded living near Glade Spring with their four young children, Pamelia, James, Lucy and William. William Sr. was 65 years old.10
Residence  The family residence was located near what is now Old Mill Road, however in the days William and his family lived there the road did not exist. The home was accessed via a lane that ran out to Glade Spring - Saltville Rd. (alternately called Saltville Rd. or the Saltville Turnpike; now called Forest Hill Drive).11,12
WidowedJul 1891 Hattie was widowed at age 44 when William died in 1891 of rheumatism.
Cens-19006 Jun 1900 By 1900 Hattie's son James was married, but her other three children were still living with her.4
Cens-1910May 1910 When the 1910 census was recorded Hattie was 66 years old. She reported that all four of her children were still living. Two of them, Lucy and William, were residing with her, as was William's new wife, Margaret, and Hattie's nephew Horace [?] Flourney.13
Death1919 Hattie died in 1919.5
Burial She was buried at Old Baptist Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5

  8. [S16] It is interesting to note that William's son Whitley and his wife Mollie were also married in the Summer of 1870, after the official census date of June 1st. Yet the same census enumerator who visited the combined families in October, and who did not indicate that William and Hattie were married as of June 1st, indicated that Whitley and Mollie were married, despite the fact that their wedding did not take place until August and therefore should not have been recorded. Was it not widely known that William and Hattie had married?.
