Birth19 May 1790 Patrick Ryburn was born on 19 May 1790 near Graham's Bridge in Washington County, Virginia.3,4,5
Devisee22 Jul 1812 Patrick's father left him one half of the family lands when he wrote his will in 1812. Patrick's brother James received the other half. They were to divide the land upon the death of their mother. The two men were also to divide a collection of books, including a Bible. Patrick was appointed his father's executor.2
It appears that Patrick lived on the family land and paid his mother rent. She outlived Patrick, who wrote into his own will that his son William was to continue paying Patrick's mother the rent due on the property. Census records suggest that Mary herself lived with Patrick's brother James.
Guardian17 Aug 1813 Patrick was named guardian of his younger sister, Jane, on 17 Aug 1813. This court action took place just prior to Jane's marriage to Beattie Ryburn.6
Guardian18 Jun 1816 Three years later he was named guardian of his younger sister, Ann, just prior to her marriage to David Campbell.7
Marriage7 Nov 1816 He and Jane Stewart, daughter of William Stewart and Mary Orr,were married by Rev. Edward Crawford on 7 Nov 1816 in Washington County, Virginia.8,9
Legatee1836  Patrick's uncle, John Ryburn died in 1836. He named "his nephew Patrick Ryburn" as his sole heir and executor, leaving Patrick whatever remained after paying his just debts.10
Cens-Sum  Patrick was enumerated as the head of a household on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Washington County census records. He was enumerated in the expected age brackets, as were his known children, with one exception. There appears to be one extra female on both the 1820 and 1830 census. She falls into the 0-9 age category in 1820 and the 10-14 category in 1830. This suggests there might have been an additional daughter born about 1819. If that is the case she either died or married before 1840.11,12,13,14
Tax  Patrick appeared on the Washington County tax lists from 1813 to 1845. From 1813 through 1817 he was charged for 2 tithables which probably represented himself and his younger brother James who no doubt lived with Patrick following their father's death in 1812. In 1815 a special tax included items other than the usual horses and cows. Patrick was taxed for a bureau that year in addition to 6 horses and 16 cattle. Later in his life he was also taxed for his two sons as they reached 17 years of age.15
Death2 Oct 1845 Patrick died on 2 Oct 1845 at age 55.3
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3
Will-Recd27 Oct 1845 Patrick's will, recorded on 27 Oct 1845 in Washington County, Virginia, left his entire estate to his wife Jane. After her death the land was to pass to his son William. William's four daughters were to divide his personal property. His son John received $5.00 and was named executor.16

Ryburn and her daughter whose Ryburn ancestors originally owned the farm; in 1992 Mrs Ryburn lived in an adjacent home. Ms Coletti's notes from her interview include: "John Ryburn.... born in Washington Co. VA near Graham's Bridge, where his father, grandfather, and great grandfather were born. John died of a heart attack in 1953."

  14. [S16] There is a marriage record in Washington County (Nov. 1838) for an Elizabeth Ryburn to a John Wedding. Elizabeth has to be considered as a candidate for the unidentified female in Patrick's household. However, she is not mentioned in his will, despite the fact she was alive when he wrote it. Either Patrick deliberately did not mention her or she was not his daughter. It is also possible Elizabeth was the daughter of Patrick's brother James.
