John Robinson

b. say 1765, d. 29 June 1826
FatherJohn Robinson1 d. 1817
Birth-Saysay 1765 John Robinson [III] was born say 1765.
Marriage20 May 1789 He married Elizabeth Edmiston, daughter of Moses Edmiston and Rachel (?), on 20 May 1789.2
Land-Buy13 Dec 1805  John Robinson and John Edmiston [probably John's brother-in-law] purchased 328 acres from Mathew and Leah Kincannon in 1805 for £1,000. The land was part of a larger tract originally surveyed for Mathew Kincannon's father, Francis Kincannon in 1774.3
Land-Sell18 Jul 1808  Less than 3 years later, in the summer of 1808, John and Elizabeth Robinson, and John Edmiston sold the lower 182 acres of the tract to Moses Edmiston [probably also John Robinson's brother-in-law] for £500. The deed was witnessed by John Clark, David Robinson and Mitchell Robinson.4 [probably John Robinson's brothers]
Land-Buy16 Oct 1812  Then on 16 Oct 1812 John Robinson purchased John Edmiston's interest in the northern part of the tract which the two men had continued to own jointly.5
Land-Gift15 Feb 1814  The deed was encumbered by an obligation Francis Kincannon, as the original owner of the land, made to the congregation of Old Glade Spring Church in the late 1700s, gifting them 2 acres of land on the Old Stage Road for a meeting house and burial ground. Francis died before a deed was executed. The responsibility for the transfer carried forward to Francis Kincannon's son Mathew who had inherited this part of his father's lands, and then to John Edmiston and John Robinson jointly, and eventually to John Robinson. On Feb. 15th, 1814 John executed a deed transferring formal title to the congregation who had long since moved their church from their old meeting house at Ebbing Spring on the Middle Fork of the Holston River to the location on the Stage Rd.6
Marriage16 Dec 1817 John married second Jane Reed, daughter of Philip Reed, on 16 Dec 1817 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.7,8,9
Will1826  John wrote his will on 20 May 1826 in Washington County. He left the bulk of his land to his son Moses as well as the west end of the family home. John's wife Jane was to have the rest of the home as well as her dower share of the land. Two of John's sons, Ebenezer and John, received 10 acre parcels from the larger tract left to Moses. John also allowed his daughter Jane a horse and his son James a horse. John did not name the rest of his children but included this provision: "my part of the proceeds of the land formerly belonging to my father in Rockbridge County I allow to be divided between my wife Jane and my 9 children, to each one tenth part."10
Death29 Jun 1826 John died on 29 Jun 1826.2

Research Comment:

In 1937 Ms Vivian Coletti, as part of a WPA inventory of historical homes, visited brothers M.W.[Moses Walter] Robinson and John Robinson [sons of Ebenezer Alexander Robinson and grandsons of John Robinson III]. They provided Ms Coletti with this list of John Robinson's children: Betsy b. March 6 1790 and married January 1805; Rachel, May 5, 1792, married April 6, 1811; Moses Edmondson, b. Sept. 26, 1794; James, b. Oct. 2, 1796; John R., b. Dec. 20, 1801; Elon R. [believed to be Eleanor], b. April 12, 1804, Ebenezer Alexander b. June 6, 1806; George Edmiston [believed to be Jane Edmiston], b. Jul 1, 1809 and David Robinson b. Sept. 26, 1812.

John's grandsons also stated that John married twice, but had no children by his second wife. John's sons Moses, John, and Ebenezer Alexander remained in the family home; John and Moses did not marry. James married and settled on part of his father's plantation. Ebenezer Alexander married Rebecca Fulton and lived in his father's home until he built a brick home in which his son M.W. lived.11
