Jesse Pafford1

b. circa 1810, d. 28 May 1874
BirthCircacirca 1810 Jesse Pafford was born in North Carolina circa 1810.2
Marriage He married Rachel Robinson, daughter of Mitchell Robinson and Rachel Edmiston.3
Will21 Nov 1847  Rachel's father wrote his will in 1847. He left Rachel and Jesse's son Mitchel 10 acres of land. The 10 acres was to be taken from the southwest corner of the older man's land, lying on the river and adjacent to "Price's" land. It was not to extend more than ten rods up the river above the house then occupied by Jesse Pafford. Rachel was to have the benefit of the ten acres "with a sufficiency of firewood off my timbered land so long as she chooses to live on it."3
The wording in the will tells us that Rachel and Jesse lived on the 116 acres Mitchell Robinson purchased from Williamson Johnston in 1821. The tract had originally belonged to the Ebbing Spring Presbyterian Congregation and included the old Ebbing Spring burial ground. It sat on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River somewhat east of present day Prices Bridge Road.
Cens-185023 Aug 1850  The 1850 census recorded 37 year old Jessee and 43 year old Rachel with Samuel, 17, Mitchell, 12, William, 10, James, 8, Rachel, 3 and Moses, 4 months. Rachel and Jessee's neighbors included Rachel's sister Sarah (Robinson) Barlow and her husband Joseph. Their son, Mitchell Barlow, had also been left a 10 acre parcel in Mitchell Robinson's will. Rachel and Sarah's widowed mother, Rachel (Edmiston) Robinson was enumerated in the same cluster, suggesting these families all resided on the Mitchell Robinson land on the north side of the Middle Fork.4
Cens-186011 Jul 1860  A similiar family cluster was evident in 1860. Jesse's occupation in 1860 was listed as "cabinetmaker."2
Migration  At some point following this census Jesse migrated west, settling in Madison Co., Iowa. Rachel may have also made the trip or she may have died in Virginia.
Marriage5 Oct 1869 Jesse married second Elizabeth Ann (Edmondson) McKee, daughter of William Edmondson and Peggy Catchem, on 5 Oct 1869 in Madison County, Iowa.5,6
Elizabeth was a widow, whose first husband, John R. McKee, died during the Civil War. Elizabeth and John McKee lived near Jesse and Rachel Pafford in Virginia.
Cens-187022 Jun 1870  Jesse and Elizabeth farmed land in the Walnut township area of Madison County. The 1870 census noted that neither Jesse or Elizabeth was able to read or write.7
23 Jun 1870  Jesse and Elizabeth had one child together, a daughter born shortly after the 1870 census.
Land-Sell26 Sep 1871  On Sept. 26, 1871, while living in Madison County, Jesse and Elizabeth sold her dower interest in lands devised to her deceased husband John McKee by the will of his father James.5
Death28 May 1874 Jesse died on 28 May 1874.8
Burial He was buried at Peru Cemetery in East Peru, Madison County, Iowa.9
