James Winton Pafford1
b. 14 January 1842, d. 23 February 1907
Birth | 14 Jan 1842 | James Winton Pafford was born on 14 Jan 1842 in Washington County, Virginia.1,2 |
Marriage | 4 Sep 1867 | He married Jemima Florence McClure, daughter of Nathaniel McClure, on 4 Sep 1867 in Washington County.1 |
Cens-1870 | 18 Aug 1870 | James and Jemima migrated west after their marriage and settled in Polk County, Missouri. Their 1870 household also included 45 year old Andrew G. McKee, 43 year old Rachel McKee and 8 McKee children.3 |
| | Both families moved on to Texas; James and Jemima settled in Collin County where Jemima appears to have died in Feb. 1872. A stone in Mugg Cemetery in Weston (Collin Co.) bears the inscription: ____ wife of J.W. Pafford, Feb. 2, 1847-Feb. 23, 1872. Although the first name on the stone was not legible, it would appear the stone was probably for Jemima.4 |
| | James' brother Mitchell Pafford and his wife and his wife Martha Ann Kelly migrated to Collin County from Virginia in the fall of 1872. |
Marriage | circa 1873 | James married second Mrs. Martha A. Duncan circa 1873.5 |
Cens-1880 | 18 Jun 1880 | James and Martha lived in Collin County, Texas, in 1880. Their household included their 5 year old daughter Ella and 2 young boys with the surname Duncan who were identified as James' stepsons.6 |
Cens-1900 | 30 Jun 1900 | The official census date for 1900 was June first and in keeping with census instructions James' household was recorded as it stood on that date. The enumerator did not actually reach James' home until June 30th, seven days after Martha's death.5 |
| | The 1870 and 1880 census entries describe James as a farmer, but in 1900 he was recorded as the " sheriff of Collin Coty. [County?]" |
Death | 23 Feb 1907 | James died on 23 Feb 1907 at age 65.2 |
Burial | | He was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Collin County, Texas.2 |
