Arthur McCall

b. 16 December 1793, d. 8 July 1877
FatherJohn McCall1 b. abt 1768, d. 17 May 1822
MotherMartha Orr b. abt 1769, d. 27 Dec 1844
Birth16 Dec 1793 Arthur McCall was born on 16 Dec 1793.2
Marriage10 Jul 1817 He married first Sally Washam on 10 Jul 1817 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Land-Buy26 Aug 1818  The following summer Arthur purchased a 144 acre tract on Cedar Creek from Leonard and Mary Hutton for $1,150.4
Leonard had purchased the land from his parents James Hutton and Sarah (Dixon) Hutton in 1796.
Marriage4 Nov 1828 Arthur married second Rachel Hutton, daughter of James Hutton and Rachel Marshall, on 4 Nov 1828 in Washington County.5
Arthur was a 34 year old widower. Rachel was 17. Arthur's brother Thomas McCall was married to Rachel's half-sister Jane Hutton.
Census  Arthur's 1830 and 1840 census entries suggest he may have had a son from his first marriage. He would have been represented as a 10-14 year old male in 1830 and a 20-29 year old male in 1840, suggesting he was born around 1820.6,7
Land-Buy  Arthur purchased several tracts of land in the 1830s and 1840s. On Aug. 15th, 1832 Thomas and Jane McCall of Anderson Co., Kentucky [Arthur's brother and his wife Jane] sold Arthur 111 acres on the Middle Fork of the Holston River for $1,035. Seven years later, in Aug. 1839, Thomas and Jane sold an additional 12 acres to Arthur for $48. It was also on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.

Then on Jan. 26th 1847 William McCall sold Arthur 19 acres on the waters of Baker [later Hutton] Creek for $37. This last purchase involved land that had originally belonged to William and Arthur's father, John McCall. The two executors appointed by John's will were both deceased by 1847. Arthur had been appointed to administer the balance of the estate and to sell the tract at auction. It appears that William was the highest bidder at $56 and then sold the tract to Arthur the same day for $37.8,9,10,11
Court Record14 Sep 1835  Several of Rachel's siblings migrated to Anderson Co. Kentucky in the early 1830s. Arthur and Rachel may have briefly lived there too as their names appear on a deed acknowledgement executed in Anderson Co. on 14 Sept. 1835. A later acknowledgement, also executed in Anderson County, but dated 2 Sept. 1843 does not include their names.12
Cens-18509 Aug 1850  Arthur and Rachel probably lived on the Hutton Creek land when the 1850 census was enumerated as many of their neighbors were Baker/Hutton Creek families. Arthur and Rachel's household included Martha (19), James (18), Sarah J. (15) and John (14).13
Land-Sell20 Aug 1853  Arthur and Rachel sold the 144 acres on Cedar Creek to David Hawthorne in late 1853.14
Arthur and Rachel's daughter Martha married in 1857.
Cens-18607 Jul 1860  However James, Sarah and John still lived at home in 1860. The family shared their home with William Scott, a school master, as well as 14 year old Isaac Church.15
  James died in 1863.
Cens-18708 Oct 1870  The 1870 census recorded Arthur (77) and Rachel (57) with Sarah (34) and John (32), neither of whom married. Arthur's entry stated that he was a retired farmer and that he owned land valued at $3,000.16
Death8 Jul 1877 Arthur died on 8 Jul 1877 at age 83.2
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
