b. 15 April 1811, d. 9 April 1900
Father | James Hutton2 b. 1764, d. bet 7 Jan 1820 - 15 Feb 1820 |
Mother | Rachel Marshall |
Birth | 15 Apr 1811 | Rachel Hutton was born on 15 Apr 1811.3 |
Childhood | 15 Feb 1820 | Rachel's father, James Hutton, died in Feb. 1820 when Rachel was 9. Rachel's mother was probably also deceased as she was not mentioned in James' will. James left Rachel's older half-brothers in charge of the family until Rachel's younger sister Sarah turned 15.4 |
Ward | 21 Jan 1823 | On 21 Jan 1823 Arthur Hutton was appointed Rachel's guardian.2 |
Marriage | 4 Nov 1828 | She married Arthur McCall, son of John McCall and Martha Orr, on 4 Nov 1828 in Washington County, Virginia.1 |
Rachel was 17. Arthur was a 34 year old widower. Rachel's half-sister Jane was married to Arthur's brother Thomas.
Census | Arthur's 1830 and 1840 census entries suggest he may have had a son from his first marriage. He would have been represented as a 10-14 year old male in 1830 and a 20-29 year old male in 1840, suggesting he was born around 1820.5,6
Land-Buy | Arthur purchased several tracts of land in the 1830s and 1840s. On Aug. 15th, 1832 Thomas and Jane McCall of Anderson Co., Kentucky [Arthur's brother and his wife Jane] sold Arthur 111 acres on the Middle Fork of the Holston River for $1,035. Seven years later, in Aug. 1839, Thomas and Jane sold an additional 12 acres to Arthur for $48. It was also on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Then on Jan. 26th 1847 William McCall sold Arthur 19 acres on the waters of Baker [later Hutton] Creek for $37. This last purchase involved land that had originally belonged to William and Arthur's father, John McCall. The two executors appointed by John's will were both deceased by 1847. Arthur had been appointed to administer the balance of the estate and to sell the tract at auction. It appears that William was the highest bidder at $56 and then sold the tract to Arthur the same day for $37.7,8,9,10
Court Record | 14 Sep 1835 | Several of Rachel's siblings migrated to Anderson Co. Kentucky in the early 1830s. Arthur and Rachel may have briefly lived there too as their names appear on a deed acknowledgement executed in Anderson Co. on 14 Sept. 1835. A later acknowledgement, also executed in Anderson County, but dated 2 Sept. 1843 does not include their names.11 |
Cens-1850 | 9 Aug 1850 | Arthur and Rachel probably lived on the Hutton Creek land when the 1850 census was enumerated as many of their neighbors were Baker/Hutton Creek families. Arthur and Rachel's household included Martha (19), James (18), Sarah J. (15) and John (14).12 |
Arthur and Rachel's daughter Martha married in 1857.
Cens-1860 | 7 Jul 1860 | However James, Sarah and John still lived at home in 1860. The family shared their home with William Scott, a school master, as well as 14 year old Isaac Church.13 |
James died in 1863. | ||
Cens-1870 | 8 Oct 1870 | The 1870 census recorded Arthur (77) and Rachel (57) with Sarah (34) and John (32), neither of whom married. Arthur's entry stated that he was a retired farmer and that he owned land valued at $3,000.14 |
Widowed | 8 Jul 1877 | Arthur died in July, 1877. |
Cens-1880 | 1880 | Rachel continued to make her home with her children John and Sarah.15 |
