FatherStephen Pomeroy Jackson2 b. Jan 1789, d. 17 Dec 1849
MotherHannah Bailey2 b. 7 Nov 1793, d. 25 Feb 1854
Birth20 Sep 1824 Minter Jackson was born on 20 Sep 1824 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia).3,2,1
Harrison County was part of Virginia until 1863 at which time it and 49 other counties broke away to form West Virginia.
Education  Minter attended a country school at Jane Lew (Lewis County, now West Virginia) as well as Old Rector College (Pruntytown, Taylor County, now West Virginia).4
Cens-185011 Jul 1850 In 1850 he was enumerated in the household of A.W. Fell, a blacksmith in Gilmer County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The residence was described as a tavern. Minter was 25, owned real estate valued at $3,000, and described himself as a merchant. The household also included 20 year old Mary Fell.5
MarriageOct 1850 He married first Mary Katherine Fell, daughter of Abraham W. Fell and Frances Scott, on the 28th (family Bible) or 29th (county record) of Oct 1850 in Gilmer County.6,7
Public Serv1851  Minter represented the counties of Gilmer and Wirt in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1851-2 and 1852-53.8
Minter and Mary Katherine had two children together before she died of consumption in 1856.
Cens-186028 Jun 1860  Minter initially remained in Gilmer County following Mary Katherine's death. In June 1860 he was recorded with his 2 children: Stephen, age 8 and Mary, age 4. He was farming and listed the value of his property at $15,000.9
Perhaps sensing the ambivilence developing in the western counties of Virginia towards the southern cause, Minter moved east about 1861 with his parents and children.10,11
Military  By late 1862 he was supplying the Confederacy with niter (saltpeter), a key ingredient in gunpowder. Minter signed the receipts for these items while at Marion in Smyth County, Virginia.12
Marriage10 Aug 1864 He married second Isabella Holt Beattie, daughter of Robert Beattie and Pauline White, on 10 Aug 1864 in Smyth County, Virginia.13,14
He was 39 and she was 33. Minter listed Gilmer County, Virginia as his place of residence on the marriage license.
Military24 Aug 1864  Two weeks after his wedding Minter enlisted as a private in Capt. King's Co. of the Virginia Light Artillery (the Saltville Artillery). The Saltville Artillery consisted of men who had been previously exempt from joining the army, often because their service in some other capacity was already aiding the Confederate cause. The company's initial purpose was local defense.15
10 Jul 1865  After the war Minter returned to Charleston, West Virginia, to sign an oath of loyalty to the United States. He again stated he was a resident of Gilmer County. The form, bearing his signature, described Minter as 41 years old, 5 ft, 9 inches tall with fair skin, grey eyes and dark hair.15
Isabella had given birth to the couple's first child a few weeks earlier in Smyth County, Virginia.
Minter was a successful merchant and businessman, owning the Colonnade Hotel in Abingdon (Washington Co., Virginia) from the mid 1870s on. He was also the founder and president of the Bank of Marion in Smyth County. It was chartered in Feb. 1874.16,17
Cens-188018 Jun 1880 Minter and Isabella made their home in Marion. The family, which included their son Walter and daughter Hannabelle, were recorded in June 1880 residing in a hotel.18 [probably rooms at the Exchange Hotel whose lower floors at one time were used by the bank]
Isabelle died less than a month later.
Marriage1894 He married third Mrs. Mary Bailey in Oct. 1894 (Family record) or on Nov. 5, 1894 (Family Bible).19,20
Death13 May 1907 Minter died on 13 May 1907 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland at age 82.21,22
Burial He was buried at Round Hill Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia.1
Will  Minter's will, dated June 1st, 1906, remembered his wife Mary, his surviving children from his first and second marriages, and the sons of his deceased son Stephen. He left his widow Mary the income from stock in both the Bank of Marion and the Bank of Lynchburg in addition to real estate holdings in Volusia Co., Florida. He stipulated that she was to have the use of several rooms "over the old bank rooms in the Exchange Hotel building" in Marion. The will was recorded in Smyth Co. court on May 31, 1907. W.B. [Walter Beattie] Jackson, the executor, posted a $50,000 bond. The will was also recorded in Gilmer County, W. Virginia, suggesting Minter had maintained his relationship with that locality as well.23,24
