  Although Joseph's family was from Amelia County, two of his older sisters married men from Washington County and settled there. At some point Joseph joined them. 
Cens-1880Jun 1880  In 1880 he was recorded living in his sister Sarah Allison's home in Glade Spring. She had been widowed for about 18 months and had 6 young children in her care. Joseph (enumerated as Vernon) was 21.4 
Marriage28 Jun 1881 He married Margaret E. Edmondson, daughter of Martin Van Buren Edmondson and Caroline E. Bailey, on 28 Jun 1881 in Washington County, Virginia.5,6 
Cens-191015 Apr 1910  Joseph and Maggie lived in Glade Spring in Washington County. The 1910 census listed the following members of the household in addition to Joseph (who was working as a guard in a prison camp) and Maggie: son J. Cleveland (a railroad ticket agent), son William H. (a census enumerator), and son T. Roy (a fish merchant).7 
  The couple's eldest son, Van Edmondson, was living with Maggie's parents, as he had been at the time of the 1900 census.
