Birth18 Jan 1841 Martin Van Buren Edmondson was born on 18 Jan 1841 in Virginia.1,4 
Name Other Over the years Martin used various combinations of his given name(s) and/or initials, eg. M.V.B. or M. Van. 
Military Martin enlisted as a private in Company D, of the 1st Virginia Cavalry (a part of Wickham's Brigade of Lee's 4th Division, Army of Northern Virginia) in Abingdon, Virginia on May 14th, 1861 when he was 20 years old. He served until he was discharged on December 1st, 1862 except for a period when he furnished John McElroy as a substitute. Later Martin re-enlisted in Capt. William King's Light Artillery Battery [Saltville] and served until the end of the war.5,6,7 
Marriage27 Aug 1863 He married Caroline E. Bailey, daughter of Catharine Bailey, on 27 Aug 1863.3 
  Caroline's pension application filed many years later, reported that the couple were married in 1864 in Bristol Tennessee by Rev. Caldwell.7  
Cens-Sum1869 Martin and Carrie (as she was known) lived and farmed in the Glade Spring District of Washington County where they raised their only child, Margaret.8,9 
Public Serv1875  In 1875 Martin served on the first town council for the community of Glade Spring.10 
Cens-19004 Jun 1900  At the turn of the century the couple ran a hotel in Glade Spring where they also provided a home for their grandson, Edmondson Wright.4 
  The hotel had originally been built in 1868 by Hiram Thompson who purchased the land from Samuel Dunn Allison. The hotel changed ownership several times. Dr. Andrew Fullen Horne owned it for a few years around 1916.11 
Cens-1910Apr 1910  Martin and Carrie sold the hotel before 1910. Martin did not list an occupation that year, but Edmondson Wright was still living with them and he was employed doing "odd jobs."12 
Will28 Feb 1912 Martin wrote his will on 28 Feb 1912. He left all his real and personal property to his wife Carrie. He stipulated that on his death his real estate was to pass to his daughter Maggie Wright and her 4 sons. In addition, perhaps in recognition of the years he spent in their home, Martin bequeathed a specific lot facing the Norfolk and Western Railroad (the Echols Property) to his grandson, Van Edmondson Wright.13 
  The Echols property also contained a hotel and from 1902 to 1915 the east side of the property was occupied by the Bank of Glade Spring.14 
Death25 Mar 1918 Martin died on 25 Mar 1918 in Glade Spring as a result of an accidental fall down a flight of stairs.7
