Childhood  William was the 5th child and second son in a family of 6 children. He grew to adulthood on his parent's farm in Smyth County.6,7 
Marriage16 Sep 1873 He married Mary Jane Jones, daughter of Andrew Jones and Mary Jamison, on 16 Sep 1873 in Washington County, Virginia.8 
  William and Mary settled in Washington County after their marriage. William's parents moved from Smyth County to Washington County about the same time and settled in the Chestnut Ridge area. 
Cens-188016 Jun 1880  In 1880 the young couple were enumerated living in the same household as William's parents. William's occupation was listed as "farmer."9 
ChildDeathJul 1890  William and Mary's son Andrew died from typhoid in 1890 at the age of 8. 
Death19 Jan 1899 William died on 19 Jan 1899 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 46.10,3,1 
Burial He was buried at Wolfe Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3 
  Mary was enumerated on the 1910 census living on Chestnut Ridge Road near William's brother James. This would seem to suggest William and Mary remained in the general neighborhood in which they were enumerated with his parents in 1880.
