Birth24 Sep 1787 William Buchanan was born on 24 Sep 1787 in Virginia.4
Marriage21 Oct 1813 He married Jane Keys, daughter of Benjamin Keys and Elizabeth Stuart, on 21 Oct 1813 in Washington County, Virginia.5,1
They appear to have raised a family of at least 9 children who survived to adulthood.
William served as "high" sheriff of Washington County for many years and was a magistrate and overseer of the poor.6
Will30 Jan 1846 William wrote his will on January 30th 1846. In it he named his wife Jane, sons Benjamin K., Mathew H., James S., Andrew E. (received the home place) and John K. as well as his daughters Margaret, Elizabeth and Bethia [all Buchanan] and his daughter Sally Kelly. Benjamin and Mathew were named executors. The will was witnessed by Robert Keys and Philip Widener.7
The will referenced William's "smith tools", his surveyor's tools, and a tanyard he owned with John Kelly [his son-in-law]; all of which suggests William was a man of many interests.
Death29 Mar 1846 William died on 29 Mar 1846 at age 58.4
Burial He was buried at Moore Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
It appears that William had either inherited or purchased his father's land as the property William left to his own son Andrew was known years later as the "old Mathew Buchanan place."
