Birth20 Jul 1825 James Stewart Buchanan was born on 20 Jul 1825.4 
Devisee30 Jan 1846 James's father William left James a share, along with two of his brothers, in a plantation known as the Spear Place. He also received his father's interest in a tanyard William had owned with John Kelly. In addition, each of the siblings received an equal share of over 5,000 acres of land in Johnston County, Tennessee.3 
Marriage15 May 1855 He married first Margaret Buchanan Edmondson, daughter of Col. Robert Buchanan Edmondson and Nancy Dysart Beattie, on 15 May 1855 in Washington County, Virginia.1,5 
Guardian27 Dec 1858 James was named guardian of three year old Samuel Moore, orphaned son of his sister Sarah Buchanan Kelly Moore on 27 Dec 1858 in Washington County, Virginia.6 
Cens-18604 Jul 1860 After their marriage James, Margaret, and their son Robert settled next to her parents in Washington County.7 
Widowed26 Apr 1866  Margaret died six years later, on 26 Apr 1866. 
Cens-18708 Oct 1870  The 1870 census enumerated James, working as a merchant and caring for Robert, age 14. They were living next to Martin and Carrie Edmondson; Martin was the younger brother of James's deceased wife, Margaret (Edmondson) Buchanan.8 
Marriage17 Feb 1875 He married second Jennie Watkins, daughter of Thomas Watkins, on 17 Feb 1875 in Washington County.9,5 
17 Feb 1875 He was 49 and she was 24. 
Cens-188026 Jun 1880  He and Jenny lived in the Glade Spring district of Washington County. The 1880 census listed James as a farmer and enumerated 3 servants in the home with the couple.10 
Cens-19004 Jun 1900  By 1900 James was working as an insurance agent. The couple does not appear to have had children.11 
Death22 Nov 1911 James died on 22 Nov 1911 at age 86.4 
Burial He was buried in the Edmondson family section at Old Baptist Cemetery Annex, Washington County.4
