Marriage | 3 Jun 1813 | He married Elizabeth Dunn, daughter of William Dunn and Lydia Musgrave, on 3 Jun 1813 in Washington County, Virginia.4 |
Tax | 1815 | The 1815 Washington County tax assesment includes 2 entries that may pertain to William. The first references a small improvement owned by Robert and "Shaw" (W.S.) Logan in the Saltworks Valley joining Robert and James Logan. The land consisted of 188 acres and several small cabins. It was valued at $850. The second property was owned by William S. Logan and was described as a 160 acre farm on the Saltworks Rd in Rich Valley joining William Dunn and J. Baker. John Dunn lived on the land. The property included a log dwelling house, a log barn, and a log cabin. William was also assessed for 2 slaves, both under the age of 12.1 |
Devisee | 27 Dec 1818 | William's father, James Logan, wrote his will in December 1818, leaving William 50 acres of land which were part of a survey known as the Chesnut ridge survey. James stipulated that the 50 acres was adjacent to William's existing tract. William also received his share of the plantation's stock and $10.00 in cash.2 |
Executor | 1819 | The following year William was named executor of his father-in-law's estate.5 |
Cens-1820 | 7 Aug 1820 | William was recorded on the 1820 census for Washington County. He would have been represented by the tally mark in the male 26-44 column. Also indicated was a 26-44 year old female and 3 boys under the age of 10.6 |
Cens-1830 | 1 Jun 1830 | By 1830 2 young females had joined the household.7 |
Cens-1840 | 1 Jun 1840 | The 1840 census entry for William suggests his household included himself and Elizabeth, their youngest son Jeptha [20-29 yr old male] and their 3 daughters. However, the presence of a 30-39 year old female and 2 males 15-19 suggests other family members [widow and sons?] may have shared the home.8 |
| | It is possible the 30-39 year old woman represented Elizabeth's widowed sister Jane Moffett whose husband died in 1834. The 1850 census, enumerated following the death of both William and Elizabeth, recorded their son Jeptha Logan as the head of a household that included his younger sisters as well as Jane Moffett. |

It also lists property received of Caleb Logan in full of devise to Elizabeth Logan dec'd wife of intestate. It also lists a payment of $25.00 to Elizabeth Logan "one of distributees on acct of her share of the estate". Jepthae N. Logan received $22.50 with the same description.10 |
