Birth17 Oct 1848 Sarah Ann Horne was born on 17 Oct 1848 near Henry and Emory College, in Washington County, Virginia.1,3
She appears as Sallie in most records generated during her life.
Marriage13 Feb 1875 She married James Harvey Clark, son of John S. Clark and Isabella Breckenridge Clark, on 13 Feb 1875 in Washington County.4,5
Sallie's sister Mattie would marry James's brother William some years later.
Cens-188019 Jun 1880  James and Sallie lived with his mother while their children were small. The 1880 census recorded Isabella Clark as the head of the household, with James and Sarah (Sallie), and their sons, John, Henry and David. James's younger brother William, age 40, was also still at home.6
ChildDeath  James and Sallie suffered the loss of 5 of their 7 children in the 20 year period between the 1880 and 1900 census. A son was born prematurely and died at one month of age in 1889. Another son, Chester, died in 1892 at age 6. A daughter, Hellah [Helen?], whose date of birth is not known, died before the 1900 census enumeration. And sons Henry and David died within 3 days of each other in the spring of 1900. They were 21 and 20 years old, respectively. Though their cause of death is not known for sure a descendant of James and Sallie reports that at least some of these deaths were due to dysentery.7
Cens-19006 Jun 1900  Six weeks after the death of sons Henry and David, James also died. The date was June 1, 1900 which also happened to be the official enumeration date for the 1900 census. The census taker visited the family 6 days later, but following the official guidelines he recorded the family as it existed on June 1st. Therefore James, age 60, was listed as the head of the household. Sallie, when asked how many children she had given birth to replied, "7 but only 2 living". They were John, age 23, and James, age 16 who were enumerated with her. Also in the home was a Nancy Gilla, age 50, who was listed as a "friend."8
Cens-19104 May 1910  The following year John married, but James remained on the family farm with his mother. Sallie was listed on the 1910 census with James (age 25, farmer) and Belle Horn (her sister) as members of her household.9
Enumerated as the adjacent family was Sallie and Belle's sister, Mattie, with her second husband, Andrew Clark.
Cens-19201920  Sallie's son James married in the years following the 1910 census and assumed the role of head of the household. In 1920 he and his wife Bessie were enumerated with the first of their two children. Sallie was also present, as was her sister Belle (Rosa Belle). The 2 women were 71 and 50 years old, respectively.10
Death11 Dec 1921 Sallie died on 11 Dec 1921 at age 73.1
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia. A 4 sided monument carries the names of Sallie, her husband James and two of their children, David and Henry Martin.

  2. [S7] Sallie's marriage record states that her mother's name was Nancy B. Horne. However, her father married Mary Fullen in Nov. 1847 and according to her cemetery and death record, Sallie was born in Oct. 1848. She is listed with John and Mary Horne on the 1850 census and her siblings, born just a few years after her, all listed their mother's name as Mary on their own marriage records. Therefore, it appears Sallie's mother's name was recorded as Nancy in error.
