FatherHenry Horne2 b. abt 14 Jul 1799, d. 14 Aug 1843
MotherMartha "Patsy" Edmondson2 b. abt 1806, d. aft Jun 1880
Birth8 Jun 1826 John Edmondson Horne was born on 8 Jun 1826 in Washington County, Virginia.1,3
Marriage11 Nov 1847 He married Mary B. Fullen, daughter of Andrew E. Fullen and Mary Buchanan, on 11 Nov 1847 in Washington County.4
Cens-18509 Sep 1850 Three years after their marriage, John and Mary were enumerated on the 1850 federal census for Washington County. John was twenty-four and Mary was twenty-two. They were living next to John's widowed mother and 4 of his siblings.5
Land-Buy10 Jul 1856 On 10 Jul 1856 John purchased a tract of land containing just shy of 99 acres from the estate of Jane Reid. The land was located on the Middle Fork of the Holston River. John had originally purchased 218 acres from the estate but he and William McCall had agreed to divide the land. William had since died and a separate deed executed in Oct. 1856 sold the balance of the land to William's heirs.6
Cens-186012 Jul 1860  By 1860, when the census taker again visited, John and Mary's family had grown to include five children.7
ChildDeath  Another daughter, named Mary Jane, had died of dysentery in 1854. Two days after her death a third daughter was born to the family. She was named Mary Elizabeth, no doubt in memory of her older sister.
Military  John appears to have fought in the Civil War but the regiment with which he was associated is unclear. A John E. Horne was listed on George Graham's list of members of Comapny F. of the 37th Virginia Infantry. Alternately, a John Edmondson Horne is found on the roster of the 48th Virginia Infantry.8,9
Cens-1880Jun 1880 John and Mary were enumerated next door to Mary's sister, Isabella Fullen Clark, near Glade Spring Virginia in 1880. Their youngest five children were still at home, ranging in age from Mollie, 25, to Rosa, (Belle) 12.10
John seems to have been a successful farmer, claiming land valued at over $9,000 in 1860 and $7,000 in 1870.11,7
Both figures were above average for the neighborhood. At some point following his mother's death John would have inherited a tract of land "on the river" left him in the will of his mother's father, John Edmondson.12
Death18 Apr 1900 John died on 18 Apr 1900 at age 73.1
Burial He was buried in the Horne square at Old Baptist Cemetery, Washington County, Virginia.1
