Birth24 Feb 1808 John's headstone states that he was born on February 24th 1808. This is also the date recorded for his birth or baptism in the parish register of Killean, in the County of Argyll, Scotland. However, it appears his birth was also recorded in the parish of Campbeltown and in that register he was reported to have been born on February 21st and baptised on the 25th. It is difficult to know why John appears to have been baptised in 2 different parishes, and why there appear to be conflicting dates recorded for his birth and baptism.4,2,5

In addition to the usual distribution of land and personal estate he bequeathed $200, the interest of which was to be paid each year to the minister of Glade Spring Church.
