Birth-Calccirca 1 Mar 1795 Samuel Beattie was born circa 1 Mar 1795 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
He grew up on the huge tract of land settled by his grandfather, John Beattie, in the late 1700s. Samuel was the 4th son in a family that included 10 sons and 3 daughters. A few of the sons received parcels of land from their father and thus remained in Virginia. But most of the boys left Virginia and settled in Kentucky or Missouri.

Hence, around 1818 Samuel and his brother David, each with $1,000 from their father, headed west to Missouri. Samuel settled on what was known as Thrall's Prairie (then Howard Co., later Boone Co.). David died in Howard County in August 1819.5,6,7
Marriage11 May 1820 Samuel married Mary Graham Denny on 11 May 1820 in Boone County, Missouri.8
Following their marriage the couple traveled by horseback to Garrard County, Kentucky. The trip took 3 weeks.9
In the fall of 1820 Samuel's cousin James Beattie [son of David Beattie and Mary (Beattie) Beattie] packed up his family back in Virginia and migrated to Boone County as well. However, as with Samuel's brother David, the move did not turn out to be a happy one. Within a year James, his wife, and at least 2 of their children had died. Samuel served as executor of James's estate, which entered probate in Boone County in late Nov. 1821.10
Court Record21 May 1822  Samuel briefly served as guardian of James's sons Mathew and Armstrong, but relinquished that role in May 1822.11
Aug 1823  He made several trips from Missouri back to Virginia to settle James's interests in Washington County. The estate paid Samuel $56 to cover travel to Virginia during the spring and summer of 1823.12
Occupation Samuel was primarily a farmer; his land was located about 1 1/2 miles north of the Columbia Courthouse. He also served as the first constable of Perche township.9
Death31 Jan 1831 Samuel died on 31 Jan 1831.3
Burial He was buried at Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri.3
Both Samuel and Mary may have been initially interred on their own property. An 1882 county history states that Samuel was buried by the side of his wife on the old homestead.9
