Birth25 Sep 1747 Robert Buchanan was born on 25 Sep 1747 in Augusta County, Virginia.3,4
Baptism6 Mar 1747/48 He may have been the Robert Buchanan, son of John Buchanan, who was baptized by the Rev. John Craig at the North Mountain Meeting House in Augusta County, Virginia, on 6 Mar 1747/48.5
Land-Sell16 Mar 1778 On 16 Mar 1778 Robert is reported to have sold land in Augusta County to Patrick Buchanan [his brother]. Robert lived in Washington County at the time but Jane was not included on the deed, suggesting they were not yet married.6
The sale date on this deed was found in Chalkley's Chronicles of Augusta Co. Virginia which consists of abstracted records. A microfilmed copy of the deed shows a large blotch across the date the land was actually sold. The deed was recorded on March 16, 1779.7
Marriage Robert married Jane Beattie, daughter of John Beattie and Elinor Gilmore.8,9
Land-Sell16 Mar 1779  Robert owned additional land in Augusta County which he and Jane sold shortly after their marriage. A deed executed March 16th 1779 documents the sale between Robert Buchanan and Jean, of Washington Co., to Philip Saylor.10
Deathbefore Sep 1779 Robert died before Sep 1779 at which time he was described as deceased in a court document whereby his widow Jean [Jane] released her dower in the 260 acres in Beverley Manor that Robert had sold to Philip Saylor the previous March.11
Land  Robert owned land in Washington County as well. In 1784 the Washington County courts assigned a commision to determine Jane's dower rights in Robert's land. Other records involved Robert's daughter Margaret, who was his only heir.12
Mary Jane Beaty Davis Moffett, writing in her journal in 1870, stated that her mother (Sarah Davis, dau of Jane Beattie) thought "that Grand Mother's first husband [Robert Buchanan], and Uncle Johnny [John Buchanan, husband of Ann Ryburn and brother-in-law of Mathew Ryburn] were brothers."13
