BirthSep 1872 William Basil Horne was born in Sep 1872 in Virginia.2,3
Childhood  William's father died the year after William was born. William and his 3 older sisters lived with the children's paternal grandparents on the Old Stage Rd south of Glade Springs in Washington County. The family home served as an inn for travelers in the days before railroad travel became popular. It had originally belonged to William's great grandfather, Basil Talbert.
Court Record4 May 1882  William's sister Mary married in 1881 by which time William's paternal grandparents were also deceased. As their grandfather, Isaac Horne's heirs, William and his sisters inherited the Old Stage Inn and surrounding property. An 1882 court order divided the property with William receiving 45 acres, including the house "on the public road" and the supporting buildings such as the kitchen, outhouses, granary, stables and spring-house.4
As an adult William remained on the farm and provided a home for his mother and sister Elizabeth.3,5
Marriagecirca 1922 He married Louisa M. (?) circa 1922.6
Cens-19305 Apr 1930  The 1930 census recorded William at age 57 and Louisa at age 49. William owned the farm. He also owned a radio, one of the interesting questions on the 1930 census. Lousia worked as a public health nurse. The couple also shared their home with William's 65 year old sister Elizabeth.6
In 1958 and 1959 the Bristol Courier and the Roanoke Times published a series of articles on historical homes of Washington County. The articles were written by Mrs. Phebe Fullerton Blevins and were republished by the Historical Society of Washington County in the spring of 1968. An article titled "The Old Glade Stagecoach Inn" includes comments by "W.B." Horne. Mr. Horne remembered the old log kitchen with its huge stone walk-in fireplace. He also remembered the slave quarters. At the time Mr. Horne owned the home it still contained furniture made long before the Civil War. However, the original home had been expanded and the original log walls covered in white weatherboarding.7
Death1960 William died in 1960.8
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.8
William and Louisa left their property, including the inn, to their niece, Eleanor (Clark) Shelburne. Eleanor was the daughter of William's sister Sarah (Horne) Clark.9

Visit the page showing the Glade Spring area on maps made in 1821 and 1890. Look for the home labeled "Widow Talbot" (William's great grandmother Mary Logan Talbert) on the 1821 map and the corresponding marker on the 1890 map marked "Mrs. Horn" (William's mother). Additional detail is presented in a chart following the maps11
