Birth12 Mar 1856 James Buchanan Cole was born on 12 Mar 1856 in Washington County, Virginia.2,3 
Migration1872  In 1872 he left Virginia and moved to Andrew County, Missouri, where he lived with his aunt, Sarah Jane Cole and her husband John Breckenridge Cole. They had moved to Missouri prior to the Civil War.4 
Educationbetween 1877 and 1878  James attended the University of Missouri from 1877 to 1878.5 
Cens-18801880  James returned to the Beattie household in Andrew County where he was enumerated in 1880. Several other Cole family members (identified as John Beattie's nieces or nephews) were also part of the household.6 
Marriage He married Virginia Lee Bedford.7 
  In 1899 James and Virginia and their 5 children moved to Kirksville, (Adair County) Missouri, where James studied osteopathy at the American School of Osteopathy. The 1900 census recorded the family living at 716 Harrison St. in Kirksville. The entry for 44 year old James noted that he was "attending school."8 
  James graduated in June, 1901 after which the family settled in Columbia (Boone Co.), Missouri where James practiced his profession. In 1910 they lived on High Street in Columbia. One additional daughter, Virginia, was born abt 1902. However the couple's oldest daughter, Mary died in 1907 at age 24. She had studied music and attended the University of Missouri until ill health forced her to leave in early 1904.9,5 
  James and Virginia's eldest son, Redmond Selecman Cole, studied law and eventually served as a judge in Oklahoma. He was also an avid genealogist; his research and correspondence, much of it conducted during the early 1900s, is cited throughout this website. Death9 Jan 1942 James died on 9 Jan 1942 in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, at age 85.2 
Burial He was buried at Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri.2
