Marriage He married Elizabeth Patterson.3 
Cens-Sum  James and Elizabeth lived in the Glade Spring district of Washington County where they raised a family that included 8 children who lived past infancy. In addition, at least two daughters died at birth or shortly after, one in 1854 and one in 1866. A third daughter may have also died shortly after birth (see notes under Infant daughter b. 1854).

James appears to have been a successful farmer, owning land valued at $7-8,000 (1860 and 1870 census valuations). Prior to the Civil War he owned at least 3 slaves.4,5,6,7 
Death16 Jan 1884 James died on 16 Jan 1884 at age 56.2 
Burial He was buried at Moore Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2

settlement:$30 for tombstones, medical bills and a few misc. but nothing having to do with heirs. 
Probate Recd25 Sep 1890  WB 25: 106: another list with lots of attorney's bills and ment. of same suit. John B. states he has paid out all the funds available to him to pay debts. 
Probate Recd1892  Another settlement filed in WB 24: 173 - again no heirs mentioned but there were a lot of lawyer type bills and there was ment of a suit of John B. Cole (he was adm) vs Martha Cole and others.
