Cens-186029 Aug 1860  Charles and Eveline lived in Washington County, Virginia, in 1860. Charles (35) was a master carpenter; he owned personal property worth $1,000. Eveline (35) tended for their 5 children with the help of 2 housekeepers (Margaret Montgomery, 25, and Mary Ramsey, 19). Four other master carpenters (all in their early 20s) lived with the family.3 
Widowed  Eveline gave birth to an additional daughter in Nov. 1861, but died on or soon after that date. Charles and Eveline's daughter Mary died of cholera in Dec. 1861. 
Marriage27 Nov 1865 He married second Martha Emeline Denton on 27 Nov 1865 in Washington County.2 
  Charles was in his early 40s; Martha was about 30. 
Cens-18808 Jun 1880  In 1880 Charles and Martha's household included 5 children of their own as well as 19 year old Fannie Hickok, Charles's youngest child from his first marriage. Although other carpenters no longer lived with the family, Charles was still employed building houses.5 
Death23 Jan 1897 Charles died on 23 Jan 1897 at age 73.1 
Burial He was buried at Hickok Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1
