Birthbetween 1839 and 1844 James Edmondson was born between 1839 and 1844 in Washington County, Virginia. The 1900 census reports the date as Jan. 1844 however that is not consistent with his reported age in 1850 (11) or 1860 (19). The 1880 census supports the 1844 year of birth as does his marriage record. He does not appear to be indicated in David Edmondson's household on the 1840 census.1,2,3,4,5
Marriage18 Sep 1877 He married Sarah E. Walden, daughter of Lewis Jefferson Walden and Sarah Jane Hutton, on 18 Sep 1877 in Washington County. The entry for James indicated that he was a widower.5
Legatee12 Dec 1883  David's aunt Sarah Edmondson wrote her will in December 1833. She divided her personal possessions across a wide range of family members. Sarah received a small square table, the split bottom chairs and some "greenware". Three of James's children (son Charles was not yet born) were also remembered with items such as a bureau and looking glass, a small bed, or a trunk and wash stand.6
James and Sarah lived in the Glade Spring district of Washington County where they raised 4 children. Sarah appears to have died before 1900 as she was not present on the census enumeration for that year and the entry for James listed him as a widower.

In 1900 James was employed as a carpenter. His son John worked as a painter. The census also recorded that James owned his home which was not mortgaged. Three of his children, Stella, John and Charles were enumerated with him that year.4
