Birth8 May 1864 Edwin Lee Gardner was born on 8 May 1864 near Saltville in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Marriage5 Sep 1888 He married Laura Alton Dickenson, daughter of William Bourn Dickenson and Mary Elizabeth Beattie Edmondson, on 5 Sep 1888 in Washington County.3 
  They were second cousins. In addition, Edwin's sister Hattie was married to Laura's brother, Robert. 
Migration Edwin and Laura migrated to California following their marriage. They settled in Ventura County where they purchased land with money Laura inherited from her father William Dickenson who died in 1887.4 
  The property sat in the Santa Clara River Valley on the east side of present day Ventura where over many years the river had created a delta of extremely rich soil. 
  Two of Laura's sisters had settled in neighboring Santa Barbara County as early as 1871.5,6 
Cens-Sum The 1910 census enumeration for Ventura County recorded Edwin and Laura with their 3 sons Eugene, Laurence and Alton. Edwin was stated to be a farmer on both the 1900 and 1910 enumerations.7,8 
  Edwin grew lima beans on his land and also planted walnut trees.9 
Widowed27 Jun 1914  Laura died on 27 Jun 1914. 
Marriage29 Jan 1919 Edwin married second Marie Victoria Plaw on 29 Jan 1919.4 
  She was one of 6 children born to Joseph Plaw (b. 1837, London, England) and Margaret Dixon (b. 1851, Brooklyn, New York). Marie was the librarian at the Ventura Public Library when she and Edwin met.4 
Cens-192020 Jan 1920  Edwin and Marie also lived on the Gardner farm on Telegraph Rd in Ventura Co. where they were enumerated in 1920 with Edwin's son Alton.10 
Cens-193010 Apr 1930  By 1930 the surrounding community was identified as Saticoy. One of the interesting questions asked of each household on that year's census was whether the family owned a radio. Edwin's entry was marked in the affirmative.11 
Death11 Jan 1947 Edwin died on 11 Jan 1947 near Saticoy in Ventura County, California, at age 82.12,4 
Burial He was buried at Carpinteria Cemetery in Santa Barbara County.4,13

The photo includes 5 of the 6 surviving children of Thomas E. Gardner and Ellen Lansdowne (Graham lived in Virginia). The additional female in the photo is Lulu Allison, wife of George Gardner
