Research Comment:

Hugh's 1860 census household included, in addition to himself: Jane (27), Mary (20), Margaret (20), Thomas (17), Arthur (17) and Sarah (14). This suggests Hugh and Nancy were the parents of two sets of twins, born back to back in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It also raises the question of the 27 year old Jane; there was no 17 year old Jane in Hugh and Nancy's 1850 household. I have not found any record suggesting Hugh remarried after Nancy's death so it doesn't appear Jane was a second wife.

Was Jane actually Hugh and Nancy's daughter - even though she was not enumerated with them in 1850? Hugh's 1840 census household included two females who are not accounted for by the list of children below: a female aged 5 to 9, and a female aged 10-14. It is likely the 5 to 9 year old female in the 1840 household represented Jane. It is also likely she was the Jane Reed who married Madison Bishop in 1862. Jane and Madison Bishop named their first two children Hugh and Nancy. Jane's 1862 marriage record stated she was the daughter of Hugh and Barbara Reed, further suggesting Nancy's full name was Nancy Barbara (Keys) Reed.7,8,9
