Cens-1910 | 23 Apr 1910 | America and John moved to McDowell County, West Virginia where they were recorded in 1910 living in Marytown precinct with their first child, "Raymond". John worked as a carpenter. The census taker made the following notation in the margin: "Big Sandy Coal __ - Marytown plant."6 |
In the spring of 1920 America gave birth to the couple's 5th child. In June her mother and sister Mary arrived on the train from Virginia for a visit. John had been ill with a cold, but felt better and went to meet them on the train, then returned to work. But his illness quickly worsened.7 | ||
Widowed | 23 Jun 1920 | John developed mastoiditis and died on 23 Jun 1920.7 |
John's older brother, Thomas, a bachelor, also lived in McDowell County and worked at the mines. He took on the responsibility of helping America and the children. | ||

Cens-1930 | 10 Apr 1930 | There the next federal enumeration recorded them in April 1930. Thomas worked as a bricklayer and owned a home valued at $600. Seven children were also listed: John, who was 18 and worked as a salesman in a general store, Frances, 15, Thomas 12, Clyde, 10 [all children from America's first marriage] and Hugh, 7, Joel, 4 and Sarah M. [Peggy], 4 months [all children from America's marriage to Thomas].9 |
